The Norway and EEA Grants help climate disaster prevention in Slovakia

Slovakia has received 104 million NOK for prevention of climate disasters via the Norway and EEA Grants in the period 2009-2014. In Slovakia, this means support for projects that improve the adaptation to and knowledge about climate change and the preparedness against floods and droughts. The Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB) and the Norwegian Directorate for Energy and Water (NVE) are super vising the projects.

Slovakia is a country that is subjected to long periods of drought and torrential rains, and this creates challenges for the population. Extensive prevention work is therefore imporant. The programme for prevention of climate disasters entails several different projects of all sizes. One of these projects is called “Ondava for Life”. It takes place in the Bardejov and Svidnik districts in the North East. About 8400 people live in the area, which covers 340 square kilometers. It is particularly prone to landslides, floods and erosion. To hinder this, the Ondava for Life project dig strenches in the fields to prevent water from rushing into streams and rivers at high speed creating floods.

Another important aspect of the Ondava for Life project is the inclusion of minorities. The unemployment rate in Eastern Slovakia is about 20 per cent, and the Roma population especially struggles to find work. When the programme operators advertised for members of the Roma population to participate in theproject, 400 signed up. There was how ever only work for 150. One of those who got a job is Slavka Feranova (38). She tells DSB that she is happy with it and that the work is easy, but nice.

Peter Straka, the Slovak project leader, is looking forward to seeing the result of everyone’s hardwork. There have been few problems, he says, although communication with the landowners can be challenging as there sometimes are as many as seven people owning the same land, and they all have to agree to the digging. Mr. Straka is optimistic though, and says that he is convinced these projects will benefit both the Slovak people and the nature.
